What to Expect From This Year’s WWDC

What to Expect From This Year’s WWDC

Hey folks! It’s been about a month since the last blog but that was because we had a lull in the goings on in the Apple world.  Thankfully, Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 is coming up on June 9, 2025. The big keynote starts at 10 a.m. PT. You can catch it live on Apple’s website, the Apple TV app, and YouTube. It’s going to be a blast, with online sessions and labs for developers all over the world.

iOS 26 and the “Solarium” UI Overhaul

Apple is poised to unveil iOS 26, a substantial transformation of its mobile operating system switching to matching the year of the OS release rather than the direct sequence of numbers they’ve been doing for years now.  The update, designated “Solarium,” will introduce a revamped user interface throughout iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. Notably, iOS 26 is expected to adopt a glass-like appearance, incorporating translucency for menus and buttons, and introducing a novel floating tab bar at the bottom of select built-in applications.

macOS 26: Welcome to “Tahoe”

Maintaining its custom of naming macOS versions after California landmarks, Apple is poised to release macOS 26, affectionately known as “Tahoe.” This update is anticipated to introduce a substantial design overhaul, harmonizing with the consistent aesthetic transformations across Apple’s operating systems.

Apple Intelligence: Incremental Enhancements

During WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled its AI platform, Apple Intelligence. However, substantial enhancements are not anticipated for this year’s conference. One notable development may be the accessibility of Apple’s Foundation Models to third-party developers, facilitating the seamless integration of AI capabilities into applications. Nevertheless, a significant overhaul of Siri has been indefinitely postponed, as Apple CEO Tim Cook cited the necessity of additional development time to attain exceptional quality standards.

Gaming: A New Frontier

Apple is poised to make a substantial expansion into the gaming industry. The company intends to launch a new gaming application for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac, superseding the current Game Centre. This platform will feature functionalities such as achievement tracking, leaderboards, player communication, and direct access to games from the App Store and Apple Arcade. This strategic move is further supported by Apple’s recent acquisition of RAC7, a renowned game developer responsible for the acclaimed game Sneaky Sasquatch.  Also, expect Cyberpunk 2077 to be formally announced from someone on the CD Projekt Red team.

Hardware Announcements: Unlikely

WWDC 2025 is projected to have a reduced scale in comparison to previous editions, with no significant hardware announcements anticipated. Although there are speculations regarding products in development, including new Macs and a “HomePad” smart home hub, their debut at this event is highly improbable.

Overall Outlook

WWDC 2025 is poised to be a software-centric event, emphasizing design overhauls and incremental advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Although the absence of substantial hardware announcements and substantial AI upgrades may mitigate expectations, the conference will still offer valuable insights into Apple’s software roadmap and its evolving ecosystem.
